Our ancestors had a vast knowledge not only on earth sciences, but also about
Space. They did a detailed study about the solar system . Planets, revolution of earth,
dwarf planets, Asteroids etc. Aryabhatta , a great scholar who lived in 4th century, has
written about various eclipses and revolution of the planets, in his book named
“Aryabattayam”.In ancient times people did not have much knowledge about the happenings
in the Space. This became an advantage for few. They made the lay man believe , that
they had control over the planets, and inculcated a superstitious belief in mankind. For
instance. Solar eclipse was believed by the leyman as an evil happening . Till today,
even after so many scientific developments, mankind find it hard to come out of these
superstitious beliefs.
In such situation, to admire and to enjoy the miracles in the space, an authentic
and scientific explanations becomes an essential component. To serve this purpose
and to give a scientific awareness, Galileo Scientific Centre was started at Madurai in
the year 1998. This organization has been spreading the scientific truth to students,
Teachers and the public , through various modes for the past years.

The 2010 solar Eclipse, was organized and celebrated as a festival by this
Centre at Madurai. The Galileo Science Centre and the Department of Education,
Mother Teresa Women’s University together clubbed in and organized a one week
campaign, prior to the Solar Eclipse. They spread the news as a Scientific information to
schools, colleges and the public. Nearly 30,000 of the public benefitted through this
campaign.

Similarly, The Venus Transit, that happened on 6th June 2012, was taken to the
public knowledge, through a co-operative effort of Galileo Science Centre and
Department of Education, Mother Teresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal. It was done
in a very short period, and the public was instructed that, if they miss this opportunity.
They will have to wait for another 105 years. The Venus transit day was organised as an
They will have to wait for another 105 years. opportunity Transit day was organised as
an Astronomy festival at Madurai - with a science exhibition about the Planet, Quiz
Competition, Science Experts interaction with students etc. Nearly 5,000 public were
made provisions - as three telescopes and sun filter glasses with special filters - to
visualize the Transit of Venus. Prior to this students, teachers and public were given
awareness and demo classes on how to visualize the Transit of Venus. In seven days
nearly 15,000 of the public was give awareness.

This programme was made successful and possible by media members, School
principals etc. We fondly remember and extend our thanks and gratitude to scientist
Mr.Sivasubramanian, who participated in the demo class, as well as in the Astronomy
festival. We also extend our thanks to scientist Mr.M.D.Jeyakumar, who explained the
transit of Venus to the visitors. Science for people ...
